Welcome to the website of STEM Sports Education!
This innovative Erasmus+ project aims is to enhance secondary school students’ STEM skills and competences with sports as real- life applications to teach those subjects, with a special emphasis to be given to girls.
STEM Sports Education
01
Innovating in the way STEM is taught through Sports in School Education (STEM Sports Education) is an Erasmus+ project that runs from November 2024 to October 2026.
The European Union (EU) is currently facing a critical shortage of skills, particularly in STEM fields, as outlined in the European Education Area. Concurrently, emerging skill needs are being shaped by the green and digital transitions in society. To maintain its global economic competitiveness, the EU must prioritize the development of these essential skills. The STEM Sports project introduces an innovative pedagogical approach, combining STEM competences with Sports to cultivate key competences and promote physical activity, sports, and a healthy lifestyle. This multidisciplinary approach is particularly novel in the EU’s secondary educational sector. The project aligns with the school education priority of ‘Promoting interest and excellence in STEM’ as it seeks to integrate STEM education with Sports through interdisciplinary teaching. Employing pedagogical methods such as inquiry-based, problem-based, and design-based learning, the project aims to explicitly connect STEM and sports, promoting the development of essential STEM skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical thinking. Through these focused efforts, STEM Sports aims to create an inclusive learning environment that promotes STEM competences and addresses the broader EU objectives of fostering inclusion and equity in education. The project’s innovative and transnational nature contributes significantly to the European Commission’s vision of promoting excellence in STEM, while aligning with the European Year of Skills 2024, the Green Deal, and the Digital Agenda of the European Union.
Objectives
The aim of the STEM Sports project is to enhance secondary school students’ STEM skills and competences with sports as real- life applications to teach those subjects, with a special emphasis to be given to girls.
The project’s main objectives (O) are:
01
Make STEM Sports topics accessible to secondary school students, especially girls, and promote their increased participation in non-formal learning activities that combine the STEM and Sports subjects.
02
Develop secondary school students’ STEM skills and competences through the context of Sports, developing at the same time core motor skills, spatial awareness etc
03
Raise awareness among teachers, educators, and trainers for the interplay between STEM and Sports and offer support to them on how to promote the development of STEM and Sports and competences for students, especially girls.
04
Encourage sharing of experiences from all the partners across Europe to identify best practices for the incorporation of ideas related to STEM and Sports in non-formal learning contexts.
05
Promote a multidisciplinary pedagogical approach at school education.
06
Facilitate the widespread dissemination and sustainability of resources and innovative pedagogical approaches to the wider EU community and internationally
Target groups
The main target group of STEM Sports is comprised of 12-15 years old school students, with special emphasis to be given to girls. The target group of this project is crucial for this project as they are in a critical stage of their education and development. A secondary target group of STEM Sports includes teachers, interested in teaching STEM, and PE/Sports teachers, and especially interested to increase the interest of school students in STEM. Targeting teachers and PE/Sports instructors is crucial as they are instrumental in enhancing students’ engagement and interest in STEM through innovative and interactive teaching methods. Moreover, the project’s topic addresses an important challenge for educators in general, youth organisations and youth boards, NGOs, universities, policy makers, training organisations, afternoon clubs, educational organizations, researchers, and Higher Education staff interested in STEM and/or Sports Education, Ministries of Education and Sport, National Authorities involved in the enforcement of EU policies on STEM, Sports, governmental officials, decision makers. etc., thus all these people and entities will be targeted through a variety of dissemination means and channels
